Troy is an affluent Detroit suburb located in Oakland County, Michigan. It was first settled in 1821 and known as Troy Corners, and organized as a township in 1827. The city of Troy incorporated in 1955, and is today a thriving metropolis of nearly 81,000, making it the 11th-largest city in the state. In 2011 Troy was ranked as the safest city in Michigan and 19th-safest U.S. city, and in 2012 it came in at number 25 on CNN Money magazine's list of best places to live. Many major corporations have offices in Troy, including the Woodbridge Company, which makes its US headquarters there. PNC Financial Services has offices in the city's tallest building, the triangular-shaped 25-floor Top of Troy. Two of the nation's largest churches also make their home in Troy: Kensington Community Church and Woodside Bible Church.
One of Troy's top attractions is Troy Historic Village, which has ten original buildings from different periods of the town's history, including an 1832 general store, an 1840's log cabin and the former town hall, built in 1827. The upscale Somerset Collection shopping mall features over 180 stores, and the Troy Sports Center is the official training facility of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. Troy's winters are cold but with moderate snowfall, and summers never get too hot. The city's major annual event, Troy Family Daze, takes place in mid-September, bringing carnival rides, games, live entertainment and a contest to see who can create the best scarecrow.
